Wave of Mutilation is an action-packed gore fest. More creative fans of the genre will find much to love, as Britten scythes his way through the infected hordes of a catastrophic pandemic.
This isn't a slow-burner - you are thrown straight into the action when a hit goes well, but then oh so bad as the dead begin to reanimate. I particularly like the macabre creativity of the death scenes, as well as giving the reader "final moment" snapshots of tertiary characters not long for this world.
The pace of the novel drops in the final third as our protagonist seemingly finds shelter, but as with most ZA titles, not all is as it seems and the pace pushes up again as we are catapulted to an adrenalin-packed finish. A thrilling read.
